Lifting Up Resilience and DiversityIn this edition of the eNews, the Co-op's Racial Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Advisory Committee recognizes the contributions of Arab Americans as part of National Arab American Heritage Month. She Led the Fight Against Drunk DriversCandace “Candy” Lightner, (1946- ), an Arab-American of Lebanese ethnicity, founded Mothers Against Drunk Driving in 1980, soon after the vehicular homicide of her 13-year-old daughter, Cari. Candy learned that Clarence Busch, a repeat drunk driver, was involved in a drunk driving accident the week before he killed her daughter. Despite his record, Busch was only sentenced to 21 months in jail for Cari’s death. MADD's advocacy is credited with helping enact stiffer drunk driving laws across the country.
