Weavers Way Workshop: Your Backyard Birds and How to Feed Them!

Sunday, November 5, 2017 - 3:00pm to 5:00pm

One of the best ways to observe local wildlife is to bring birds right onto your property by setting up a feeding station. Birds are one of the best species of wildlife to observe, as they are active during the day and can sometimes become quite accustomed to humans. By providing various types of food and other amenities for the birds, you will be able to observe many aspects of their behavior, including display, mating, feeding young and predation. The class will discuss the numerous trees and plants that provide nesting opportunities and other resources, like insects, for many species of birds.

The workshop will also discuss how to identify birds using “field marks,” which are distinctions unique to each bird that can help identify them without having to learn the bird from head to toe. The class will also discuss bird behavior and bird song.

This program will be led by local birders and Weavers Way Members Cliff and Nancy Hence. Cliff and Nancy have operated a feeding station in the East Mt. Airy section of the city for more than 25 years. They have so far recorded more than 70 species of birds in their backyard!

Program attendees will have the opportunity to purchase various types of birdseed and bird feeders at a discount!
