Weavers Way Workshop: Form and Expression in Classical Music

Tuesday, October 23, 2018 - 7:00pm to 8:30pm

Do you like classical music but worry you don’t know enough to appreciate it? Are you curious, but feel put off by the jargon of music theory? This talk will introduce you to a few of the important forms (Sonata Form, Fugue, Art Song) as we listen to some passionate, romantic compositions by women composers (Clara Schumann, Fanny Hensel, Amy Beach) whose music is often overlooked by the classical music establishment. No previous study of music is necessary!

This program will be led by Weavers Way working member Tom Whitman, who earned a Ph.D. in Music (Composition and Theory) at the University of Pennsylvania. A member the music faculty of Swarthmore College since 1990, he has taught courses in music theory/composition, music history/literature, performing arts education and Balinese Gamelan (classical Indonesian percussion orchestra).
