The Power of 22: Neighborhood Activism and Political Game-Changing in Northwest Philadelphia

Thursday, September 14, 2017 - 7:00pm to 8:30pm

Join us for a discussion on how neighborhood-based political activism at the ward-and-division level can increase voter turnout, help ensure competent individuals are elected to public office, and advance Philadelphia priorities effectively at the statewide and national level. Although the presentation will focus primarily on Democratic primary election results and Northwest Philadelphia's 22nd Ward, the information and discussion will be applicable to other political parties, the interests of voters with no party affiliation, and other areas of our region.

The program will be led by Weavers Way Member John Kromer. In the May primary election, John was elected Judge of Elections for the 2nd Division of the 22nd Ward. As a volunteer, he has helped staff the polling place at Summit Presbyterian Church during the past eight elections and has been a candidate for citywide office, a campaign manager and a committeeperson. As the City of Philadelphia’s Director of Housing from 1992-2001, John supervised the expenditure of more than $1 billion in public investment in support of housing preservation and development activities that improved living conditions for thousands of Philadelphia families. The perspective gained through this experience is described in his most recent book, "Fixing Broken Cities: The Implementation of Urban Development Strategies." John teaches about the politics of housing and urban development at the University of Pennsylvania to students in the University’s Government, City and Regional Planning, and Urban Studies programs.
