Movie Screening: 'BLACK AMERICA Since MLK: Still I Rise'

Monday, February 18, 2019 - 5:00pm to 7:00pm

Fire up your Monday evening. Support a Public Screening of the powerful PBS Documentary "BLACK AMERICA Since MLK: Still I Rise" at the Ambler Theatre. It's here for ONE NIGHT ONLY! Attend this FREE Screening on Monday, Feb. 18, 2019, hosted by the AMBLER BRANCH NAACP.

This event will be commemorating the historical significance of the establishment of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. As America's oldest and largest civil rights organization, the NAACP was formed in New York City in 1909 by white and black activists, partially in response to the 1908 Springfield race riot in Illinois but primarily in response to the ongoing violence against African Americans around the country.

The film explores what it has been like, as Americans, to be black in America since MLK. Afterwards, a dialog will be facilitated by Wissahickon High School student group Celebrating All Student Achievement (CASA).

In 2010, the U.S. Sentencing Commission reported that African Americans receive 10% longer sentences than whites through the federal system for the same crimes. African Americans make up 57% of the people in state prisons for drug offenses. In 2012, a national AP poll surveying the response of Americans harboring prejudice against blacks revealed that 51% of Americans expressed anti-black sentiments, which was a 3% increase of people surveyed in 2008.

The Ambler Branch NAACP theme this year is "Driven to Serve All, Will You Join Us?" So come on out and JOIN US. Doors open at 5 p.m., with a community reception before the film starts!
