Most grants are awarded for public purposes that benefit the environment through education and/or gardening projects. Some environmentally based educational programs have also been funded through this program. Click HERE for more information.

Public Has Until March 15 to Comment on Plan to Deregulate GM corn
Syngenta Biotechnology, Inc. has petitioned the U.S. Department of Agriculture to deregulate its strain of genetically modified, insect-resistant corn. The USDA is seeking comments on whether it should deregulate the Switzerland-based company's product by March 15. Michael Mack, CEO of Syngenta, has been quoted in the New York Times as saying that pesticides and genetically engineered seeds are better for the planet than organic food and that “If the whole planet were to suddenly switch to organic farming tomorrow, it would be an ecological disaster,” calling organic food the “productive equivalent of driving an S.U.V.” To comment or read the petition, click here.

Cooperative Relief for Haiti In the wake of the devastating earthquake in Haiti, many people are wondering how they can help. The Cooperative Development Fund (CDF) has a fund strictly for the purpose of assisting people in times like these
— the Cooperative Emergency Fund (CEF). Over the last 20 years, CDF has raised over $275,000 for cooperative relief and rebuilding efforts for ten different disasters. The CEF was founded to give stability and constancy to CDF’s emergency relief efforts, many of which are of a longer-term rebuilding nature. The Cooperative Emergency Fund will be donating all monies received from here until July 2010 to help the rebuilding efforts in Haiti. CDF will be collaborating with international cooperative relief efforts in this endeavor to rebuild those co-ops afflicted by this disaster. Donating through the front page of CDF’s website is quick and easy, just visit www.cdf.coop and make a donation through their GOOGLE CHECKOUT function on the right hand side of the website. Your support is extremely appreciated. E-mail comments on the web site to contact@weaversway.coop.
